Government has been asked to support the orphanages in terms of upkeep for orphans.
The call was made by the visiting SOS Children's villages worldwide president Helmut Kutin during a meeting with President Yoweri Museveni at State House in Nakasero.
Museveni pledged to sponsor one child in each SOS village in Uganda as his commitment and support to the compassionate work by SOS villages international in Uganda.
Museveni said the challenge facing many children and young people today is the lack of development of the society and the economy, noting that for children to progress, the need money invested in various infrastructure.
The main challenges of children are the challenges of most of society. Uganda is rich in natural resources but these have not been developed to their full potential including land, mineral resources, energy and human resource development. To look after children you need money. Money is from taxes and taxes are from investments, he said.
The president of SOS villages Helmut Kutin hailed President Museveni for his support and understanding of their work in Uganda, saying the organization had opened a fourth orphanage in Fort Portal after several others in Entebbe, Kakiri and Gulu.
